For the primary resident parent going back to school likely means little will change in the relationship with their children. But for a parent who does not live with their children all the time settling into a school routine can be tough. Deborah Moskovitch, author of The Smart Divorce, has recently contributed an article to the Huffington Post with suggestions on how parents can maintain their involvement in their children’s lives.

“Make A Family Calendar:
Hang it wherever the children will see it, to show that you care. Make your children see that their lives are important to you and that they are your priority.

On the family calendar, list:
- Birthdates
- School schedules
- Other dates, such as dental appointments, dance recitals, sports games, and so on.

Establish Rules Such As The Following:
- Each parent must order his or her own tickets for children’s events.
- Each parent must make his or her own arrangements at school to get information. It is not up to your former spouse to do those things or provide information for you. It’s up to you to take the initiative.
- Don’t make your son or daughter into the man or woman of the house.
- Don’t turn your son or daughter into your best friend and confidant.
- Don’t fill the void in your bed by allowing your child to sleep there. If you eventually start a relationship and no longer allow your child into your bed because you are sharing it with someone else, the child could feel displaced.

If You Are The Noncustodial Parent, Here Are Some Ideas To Help You Maintain A Positive Relationship With Your Children:
- Some schools allow children to leave the grounds for lunch; you may be able to take them out to lunch without affecting your co-parent’s time.
- As much as you can, duplicate at your home the little things that your kids love at the custodial parent’s home–things like special Barbie dolls, books, and so on. Send out the message that you care. Duplicating items will remove the stress children may feel abouttaking their favorite things to the other parent’s home or about forgetting to bring them (but keep in mind that some items, like the favorite blanket or stuffed animal, can’t be duplicated).

Remember, your children still have two parents. They still have a family. It’s the dynamics that have changed and it’s up to parents to minimize the conflict and make transition as easy as possible.”

If you feel your timeshare arrangement should be revised contact Orlando Lawyer Jeffrey Feulner and the Men’s Divorce Law Firm today.

NEW YORK TIMES: A federal court in Brazil gave the Brazilian family of a 9-year-old boy at the center of a five-year international abduction and custody case a deadline of Thursday to turn the child over to his American father, and the lawyers for family members have indicated that they will comply, United States Representative Chris Smith said Wednesday.

Although lawyers for the Brazilian family did not respond to multiple requests for comment, the press in Brazil reported that family representatives said the child, Sean, would be turned over to his father, David Goldman, and that the family would seek no further legal remedies. Mr. Smith, a New Jersey Republican who has helped Mr. Goldman with his case, said lawyers from both sides agreed on a plan that would have the family deliver Sean to his father at the American Consulate in Rio at 9 a.m. (6 a.m. Eastern time).

Mr. Goldman lives in Tinton Falls, N.J. The legal battle, waged in American and Brazilian courts, began when Sean’s mother, a Brazilian, traveled with him from the United States to Brazil in 2004. She then asked for a divorce from Mr. Goldman and declared her intention to keep their son. She died last year. Brazil’s chief Supreme Court justice ordered Tuesday that the boy be returned to his father.

For so long it was forgotten that fathers have such important roles in the lives of children; however, in the last couple of years we have begun to see the trends changing. The New York Times is one of the sources that is helping to raise awareness on this issue.

With articles such as “Paying More Attention to Fathers,” “Fathers Gain Respect from Experts (and Mothers),” “The Basics of Fatherhood,” and “More Dads Influence Daughters’ Career Paths,” the nation is beginning to understand that BOTH parents are key factors in the wellbeing of a child’s upbringing. Managing Attorney Jeffrey Feulner of the Men’s Divorce Law Firm commends the New York Times for continuing the nationwide effort to raise awareness of the importance of fathers in the lives of their children.

As quoted in on of the articles, ‘“The walls in family resource centers are pink, there are women’s magazines in the waiting room, the mother’s name is on the files, and the home visitor asks for the mother if the father answers the door,” said Philip A. Cowan, an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, who along with his wife, Carolyn Pape Cowan, has conducted decades of research on families. “It’s like fathers are not there.”’

The times are now changing, and it is important that every parent becomes educated about the effects of a fatherless environment.

Corey Feldman is hoping to avoid a messy split from his wife and is putting their son first, his rep said in a statement Wednesday. ”Corey is deeply hurt and saddened by this unexpected change in their relationship, and has done nothing to contribute to the demise of the marriage,” the statement reads.

Susie Sprague filed for divorce on Oct. 22 after seven years of marriage and is seeking sole custody of their son, Zen, 5, with visitation rights for Feldman. She’s also seeking spousal support. Feldman is “hopeful that he and Susie can work to resolve this quickly and amicably, and he is fully committed to doing what is best for the welfare of their son,” the statement adds.

Feldman, 38, and Sprague were married in October 2002, nine months after meeting in a nightclub, on the set of VH1′s The Surreal Life in a ceremony officiated by MC Hammer and a rabbi.

A lawyer for Jon Gosselin called the ex-reality TV dad’s estranged wife Kate “the old lady who lived in the shoe” and said her no-show in court was a result of her failure to fulfill her obligations.

Mark Heller, an attorney for Jon, said his client had repaid the money the octodad had removed from a joint bank account he shared with his soon-to-be ex but Kate had yet to return the $33,000 she had taken from the bank.

“Jon Gosselin has met all of the obligations he was required to make,” Heller said outside a Pennsylvania courthouse today. “The obligations that Kate Gosselin has were not fulfilled. Maybe that explains why she didn’t appear in court today.”
