“I’m [more] present with my kids and it is important to be with them…to be connected to them… to see the joy on their faces.”

According to Business Insider, Palm Beach gossip pages are salivating over the news that Elin Nordegren has a found a new home that’s just ten miles from ex-husband Tiger Woods’ new digs … and nearly twice as big.

The couple finalized their divorce in August 2010. In the settlement, the parents agreed to live near one another for the sake of their children, Sam and Charlie. Sticking to her promise to keep daughter Sam, 3, and son Charlie, 2, close to their dad, Nordegren’s new digs are just minutes away from Woods’ $50 million bachelor pad on Jupiter Island.

Tiger Woods briefly talked about parenthood with Good Morning America host and former ESPN anchor Robin Roberts.

Robin Roberts: Is it that what is important has changed or that you have found the balance you’ve been striving to find?

Tiger Woods: Well I think that I am more present. I’m present with my kids and that’s important to be with them each and everytime I’m with them, to feel that and be connected to them. And to see their joy on their faces, whether it’s Sam dancing, creating things and coloring, rearranging furniture and all that stuff. And then I got my little brute over here who wants to do nothing but play sports, anything with sticking a ball…he’s happy. So the different dynamics there and being present for that is something that I need to be for the rest of my life.

Robin Roberts: How is it for you to be a single dad and balancing the career that you have with doing that?

Tiger Woods: It’s work, it’s no doubt. It’s tough but enjoyable. That’s the work that I love, I just love being with them and seeing what they’re doing and what they’re capable of doing, the joys and the shifts of interests, you know? That’s what’s just fun. We have a great time together.

Nordegren’s new house doesn’t have a driving range and putting greens, but it does have a 4,000-sq. ft. basement, a rarity for beach front property. According to reports, she paid $12.2M for the house, but will owe about $300,000 a year in property taxes.

One of the joys of parenthood is watching your little loved ones develop admirable social and moral traits as they grow older. As a parent, it is your responsibility to help your children effectively develop these character traits.

Full of helpful parental tricks and insightful tips, All Pro Dad recently posted an article entitled, “10 Ways To Teach Your Children To Be Compassionate.” The following is an excerpt of the article:

It Starts At The Top

Your life must lead the way for the next generation. If your existence is shallow and self-serving, your children will emulate the same. Display a generous and loving heart so that your children may see it in action. Never let an opportunity slip by that compassion can be given. It is always the small things that matter in life. A warm smile where only cold is known. A gentle embrace when all others have passed by. A helping hand to ease an overbearing struggle. It starts with you.

No Child Left Behind

Talk to your children about school life. Do they notice the girl eating alone at lunch? The boy with nobody to play with at recess? Are they themselves that child? Encourage your children to reach out to those that need a friendly face. It takes courage to do so. The group dynamic is such that those children are left behind. Teach them to be leaders that set positive trends.

Seniors Rule

In most aspects of life, seniority rules. At school and in your career. This should translate to Grandma and Grandpa as well. In most cultures, it does. In American culture, it does not. That is to our disgrace. Teach your children to respect their elders. It is biblically commanded and extremely wise to do so. Have your kids spend quality time with the older folks in your circle. To help them and learn from them. Compassion for the weak and fragile is a very strong character trait to possess.

Positive Impact

How can our compassion have meaningful results? That is the challenge to bring up and discuss with your kids. You want to have a positive impact. Giving a homeless man $5 just to buy more booze is frustrating to many people. Instead, consider pre-making survival bags for the homeless. Take the kids to distribute them. Fill a grocery bag with everyday needed items and food that does not need preparation. You will light up the face of a desperate man with gratitude and hope. If only for a brief time.

Turn The Media Tables

Television and the Internet are overflowing with bad examples for our children. Sex, violence and self-centeredness are celebrated and encouraged. It is simply not possible to filter it all out. Instead, use it for your advantage when possible. Watch what your kids are watching. When opportunity presents itself, use it. Point out moments that could have been different with compassion and decent morals. Turn the tables on irresponsible media making money corrupting the souls of society. You should see it as a war, because that’s exactly what it is.

Furry Friends

Do you have a family pet? Animals teach many great qualities. Compassion right at the top of the list. How your child treats his pet is a great indication of the character within him. Is he loving and nurturing? Or callous and abusive? Perhaps indifferent? Pets can be used to break through even the iciest of shells. Make sure your children have daily responsibilities for the care of your pet. It will teach them dedication to the well being of something besides their own needs.

Disabled Is Not A Dirty Word

Disease, birth defects and mental challenges run rampant in our world. They leave no age group untouched. In nearly all situations, it is no fault of the victim that they have been stricken with the burden they carry. Yet in many cases, they are left on the sidelines to deal with life in relative isolation. Disabled is not a dirty word. Many of the greatest stories of human triumph emerge from the ranks of the disabled. Their bodies or their minds might not be of normal state, but every soul is created beautiful and pristine. Remember that and teach it to your children.

Open Your Heart

The ability to display and comprehend emotions is not always easy for all people. Some men and women have a lot of trouble discussing out loud how they are feeling. Open your hearts to your children. They need to feel that you can verbally and physically express the love you have for them. Big hugs and three simple words on a daily basis. This builds much needed security and enforces in them the ability to love others as well. Hugging your child and telling her that you love her makes you more of a man. Not less.

Square Dealing

Once upon a time, only a scoundrel would consider taking advantage of another for profit. Businessmen had an unspoken code to be square dealing and honest in their work. It was a matter of social standing. Is this the case today? In the present, it is normal business practice to use whatever means necessary to claim the prize. Morals sacrificed and ethics out the window. This trend must be reversed. Teach your children to have standards they will not waver from. To deal fairly in all matters. Compassion flows from those that treat others with dignity and respect.

Tolerance For All Kinds

One of the most used words of this strange new century. Tolerance. Sadly, it is often misused as more of a form of control than actual acceptance. That is called social engineering and is not true tolerance. Tolerance is a love for all of God’s creations. To be color blind. To practice understanding for those different than yourself. The world today is full of open borders and worldwide communication. We can’t hide in conclaves of those only like ourselves. Relish in that fact and teach your children that it is a glorious time to be alive. You only heard about the “starving children in China” when you were little. Your child can talk to different kids all over the world on the Internet. Tolerance and compassion for all people and creatures is certainly a goal worthy of your children’s soul.

Miami Heat basketball player and NBA all-star Dwyane Wade is finally divorced from estranged (now ex) wife Siohvaughn Wade, according to the Chicago Tribune. There were few surprises, although Siohvaughn Wade’s Chicago family law attorney vowed to appeal the ruling. Dwyane Wade said he felt relieved that the long and bitter ordeal is finally over:

“It’s been a long, long process and to finally get this part behind us. I feel great, even though we still have more to get done.”

Judge Marya Nega said Dwyane Wade had proven irreconcilable differences with Siohvaughn, even though it may already have been apparent in the court of public opinion. But child custody of the couple’s two sons and the division of marital assets still have to be worked out.

Dwyane Wade still retains physical custody of his children until further proceedings determine a final ruling, according to the judge’s order. Michael Kalcheim, the tenth divorce attorney in Chicago to represent Siohvaughn Wade, said he plans to file an appeal.

He told reporters that it was improper to finalize a divorce without also finalizing child custody and financial matters:

“The judge made a mistake.”

Even though this saga may very well have another chapter, Dwyane Wade is now looking forward to charting his future in the NBA. He will become a free agent as early as this week and may very well command a $100 million contract.

The couple, who first become romantically involved at Richards High School in Oak Lawn, had been separated for nearly three years before the recent dissolution of their marriage.

James Pritkin, Dwyane Wade’s Illinois family law attorney, took the opportunity to rattle off a basketball metaphor:

“Mrs. Wade has committed her final flagrant foul. Her game is over.”

Well, maybe not quite. This could go into overtime.

Corey Feldman is hoping to avoid a messy split from his wife and is putting their son first, his rep said in a statement Wednesday. ”Corey is deeply hurt and saddened by this unexpected change in their relationship, and has done nothing to contribute to the demise of the marriage,” the statement reads.

Susie Sprague filed for divorce on Oct. 22 after seven years of marriage and is seeking sole custody of their son, Zen, 5, with visitation rights for Feldman. She’s also seeking spousal support. Feldman is “hopeful that he and Susie can work to resolve this quickly and amicably, and he is fully committed to doing what is best for the welfare of their son,” the statement adds.

Feldman, 38, and Sprague were married in October 2002, nine months after meeting in a nightclub, on the set of VH1′s The Surreal Life in a ceremony officiated by MC Hammer and a rabbi.

Florida child custody laws underwent significant changes on October 1, 2008. Prior to the change, the Florida child custody system designated one parent as the “primary custodial parent” and the other “secondary custodial parent.” Clearly, this system presumed that one parent was more influential in a child’s life with the other being less so. The primary residential parent often understood the word primary to mean “more important” and “more authorized.” Frequently, this left the secondary custodial parent disenfranchised from the lives of their children. Historically, the mother was deemed best suited for custodial parent and the father contributed little in decision-making. Instead, the father was merely awarded “standard visitation,” usually every other weekend and dinner once a week.

Florida custody laws took a positive change for Fathers this past October when a new statute was enacted that removed the words custody, visitation, and primary and secondary parent from Florida law. The new designation for both the Mother and Father is “parent,” a change that our firm views as a long overdue attempt at equalizing the parents in a divorce. Additionally, the new law requires that divorced, separated, or never-married parents develop a detailed parenting plan for raising and sharing time with their children. The plan is to specify when each parent will spend time with the children as well as outline how decisions that affect the children’s lives are to be made. The parenting plan requirement eliminates interpretation and should minimize disputes among parents allowing both a more meaningful role in their children’s lives.

At the Men’s Divorce Law Firm, we view this change as a gateway in the Courtroom to give father’s equal rights to their children. Because there is no longer a legal requirement to name one parent primary, the logical starting point is equal time and rights for both parents – a dramatic step in the right direction for fathers who have historically been awarded “standard visitation.” To our firm, this change is an opportunity to deviate from the norm of the “every other weekend” father and afford children sufficient and meaningful time with both parents. Obviously, if a specific case is not suited for shared and equal parental responsibility, the law still affords the option for sole parental responsibility or less than equal timesharing and authority for one parent.

These changes in the law began over a decade ago when the Family Law Section of The Florida Bar began considering new vernacular that would recognize that a child’s relationship with both parents must be protected. The new parenting plan requirement allows decisions to be made collaboratively as it eliminates the notion that one parent is inherently better suited to do so. This move towards equal footing is long over due. However, as with any change in the law, it will be years before the judicial system fully adjusts to this revision. For the next several years, the judiciary will contemplate the application of this rewrite to their cases while attorneys will argue on what the correct interpretation will be.

If you are wondering if you will be required to pay your spouse alimony, the most important questions are the length of your marriage and how disparate your income levels are. The court will also consider the age and health of the parties and their ability to support themselves.

The ultimate purpose of alimony is to level the playing field post divorce in long term marriages. In determining whether alimony should be awarded, the Court will first determine whether your marriage was a short term marriage or long term marriage, or a grey area marriage. While there is no bright line rule, marriages of fifteen years or more are considered long term and there is a presumption of alimony.

It should also be noted that there are multiple types of alimony including rehabilitative alimony, permanent periodic alimony, and temporary alimony. The ultimate purpose of alimony is to ensure that both parties are able to provide for themselves post-separation.

A: If there is no court order in place, you are not “the custodial parent.” Florida no longer designates a custodial or primary parent. Moreover, if your husband objects to the relocation of the child out of state, you will need to get permission from the court before leaving with the child.
